About Arctic adventure 2020
This 9 day adventurous ride takes us in a big circle around the north-east peninsula which is true highland wilderness not known or visited by many. Then down to the sesasides of the arctic sea. We enjoy marvellous sceneries and views of the wilderness and getting close to the arctic shore, we get the front seat view to the midnight sun at the horizon of the arctic circle north of Iceland.
We start the journey from lake Mývatn heading out to the eastern Mývatn highlands, passing Námaskarð and the geothermal area of Hverarönd. We ride through the lavafields of Búrfellshraun to the cabin at Péturskirkja where we take a good break before crossing the mighty river Jökulsá á Fjöllum by bridge near our destination at farm Grímsstaðir.
Overnight at Grímsstaðir farm.
We ride up to the heathlands of Grímsstaðir. High up in the wilderness we settle down in a cozy mountain hut enjoying bonfire in the evening, with the midnight sun watching over us all night long.
We ride down from the wilderness and enjoy endless views of mountains, rivers, lakes and flora of the highlands until arriving at Vopnafjörður village by the seaside of the east part of Iceland.
Overnight at a guesthouse in the village.
We head back to the highlands turning towards the north shore. Back in the wilderness we are al alone with our horses and settle down in another cosy mountain cabin in the highlands.
Now we ride towards the north shore with the arctic circle out at the horizon and the everlasting heathlands with it´s barren moorlands and rocky trails, taking us from the green valleys of Vopnafjörður. The contrasts from the green fields to barren heathlands and back to green valleys and blue rivers and lakes all around make the experience breathtaking for all travellers in this area.
We spend the day riding along the coast of Þistilfjörður, a peaceful fjord at the edge of the arctic with very small population of farmers and the little village of Þórshöfn. In the afternoon we visit the village, take a dive in the local swimming pool and relax in the hotpool.
Overnight at a nearby guesthouse.
We ride across another highland plateu called Öxarfjarðarheiði to the green birchcovered hillsides of Öxarfjörður. We follow another ancient riding trail across the highlands and enjoy a fantastic view over the bay of Öxarförður before ending the ride at Klifshagi farm where we stay over night.
We ride along the riverside of Jökulsá with farmlands and birchforrests around. We come to the Canyons of Ásbyrgi located in the national park of Vatnajökull. According to the nordic saga's this great canyon was formed by the footstep of Sleipnir, the eight legged horse of Odinn (king of the nordic gods)!
e ride towards Saltvík across the heathlands of Bláskógaheiði and Reykjaheiði, following the spectacular Blaskogariding trail. Trail formed by travellers through the centuries riding in each others hoofsteps year after year.
