About Wonders of the north
This new tour combines real mountain trails with the countryside of the north, visiting some of the most breathtaking nature wonders of Iceland. We ride through the green valleys of the north, up to the hillsides and lavafields of Lake Mývatn area and towards the edge of the Highland plateau of Sprengisandur. We follow historical trails of the past when the Icelandic horse was the dominant factor while travelling between the countryside where most Icelanders lived at first, and the seaside where the villages were buit up as trading posts.
We visit some famous places like Goðafoss -where we ride practially at the edge of the waterfall. Lake Myvatn and the lavafields of Óðáðahraun where in the past outlaws were hiding at the edge of the great wilderness of Sprengisandur!
All nights are in double rooms with made up beds and nice facilities in every way. We also visit the newly established nature baths "GeoSeas"; an infinity pool with a mixture of the arctic sea heated by geotermal water, and enjoy a great view over the arctic horizon north of Iceland!
We limit the number of riders to max 14 guests on this tour.
Meetingpoint for the group is at Eagle air airport in Reykjavík early morning 9.8. The domestic flight to Saltvík takes only 40 min. At Husavik airport in the north a bus is waiting to take the group to the nearby Saltvík farm where the tour starts and we meet staff and horses. Upon arrival at the farm there will be some refreshment waiting, and we take good time for an introduction. We take special care in selecting horses fitting to the experience level of each rider, and helping each rider with basic tips and tricks in handling and controling the gaited icelandic horses. It is our commitment to match riders and horses in the very best way right from the start!
We ride nice and easy riding trails along the coastline towards Sandur farm located at the riverbanks of Skjálfandafljót river. We cross sandy lavafields and green riverbanks on our way and enjoy rich birdlife and scenary towards the bay of Skjálfandi north of Iceland.
We ride up to the hillside of Hvammsheiði, following historical trails used by farmers and travellers through the centuries when horses where the only way of travelling faster and more comfortable than on two legs. We cross the river Laxá at a passing where the river runs through the lavafields of Aðaldalshraun. We ride along Vatnshlíð near the beautiful lake Vestmannsvatn and enjoy again a totally amazing scenary over the valley of Aðaldalur. We end the ride at the farm Stóru Laugar and spend the night at a nice guesthouse nearby.
We ride along the valley of Laxá ( Laxárdalur ) towards the wonders of lake Mývatn. The lake is surrounded by volcanoes and the magic is in the air when riding along the lake with the rough overwhelming creations of nature all around. We leave the horses at Arnarvatn farm and spend the night at a nearby guesthouse.
We ride towards the wilderness of Icelands biggest lavafields Ódáðahraun at the edge of Sprengisandur highland plateu. Ódáðahraun was said to be the home of elfs and outlaws in the middle ages and we better be careful staying together and not wandering alone in to the homeland of Iceland´s real settlers … the elves and outlaws!
We end the ride in the middle of Bárðardalur valley where we spend the night at Hotel Kiðagil, well known from our Sprengisandur tours.
We ride down the valley following the riverbanks of Skjálfandafljót. Great soft trails where we enjoy the amazing tölt, the whole day riding along the river. Just before the end of the day we ride literally at the edge of Goðafoss Waterfall; one of Iceland´s most vistited Waterfalls. We leave the horses at Hrifla farm and drive home to Saltvík with our bus. In the evening we visit the newly established natural baths „GeoSea“; a beautiful infinity pool where geothermal hot water is mixed with the arctic sea at a gorgeous location, with a view to the arctic circle north of Iceland.
Ovenight stay at Saltvík farm guesthouse.
The last day we keep on riding down along the Skjálfandafljót river through the „icelandic forest“ of Fellsskógur. We follow nice soft riding trails to Aðalból farm where we leave the horses and head back to Saltvík farm for the final night and farewell party sharing stories and experiences from the week!
